to the opening of the photo exhibition "Danube Bridges”
What does the bridge mean to me?
This is the opening speech which I gave at the exhibition „Danube Bridges” organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the first Hungarian Presidency of the European Council. It was a pleasure to welcome such a multinational crowd at this cross-border EU event. The Hungarian Presidency of the Platform Culture Central Europe - PCCE (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) has the honour to invite you and your partner to the opening of the photo exhibition "Danube Bridges” an artistic selection of pictures taken by Péter Gyukics at 8 p.m. on Friday, 3 June 2011 Opening speech by Bálint Ódor, Deputy State Secretary for EU Affairs                              Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Peter Gyukics, photographer, I would like to welcome our dear guests at this cross-border EU event. The photographies represented at the exhibition were taken for my forth photo album, „Bridges of the Danube”. In this album I guide the readers throught all the 342 bridges of the Danube river with my photos. This album is unique, the first book to show the river in this aspect from it’s source until the debouchure. I started to work on my first album in 2004 with dr. Ernő Tóth, a bridge historian, who choose 152 amongst the 12.000 Hungarian bridges. It was then when I started to seek for the hidden beauty of bridges. My task was double sided, I wanted to show these structures as the precise work of engineers, but also as an artist, a photographer. For an engineer, a bridge is one complete entity from its first meter to the last one. For the photographer, it is factual and abstact in the same time. It is the symbol of connection. It represents power, concrete, load-bearing arches, colums, a whole entity and beautiful details, rythm and monotonity, light and shadow, a humanly creation in nature. I would like to show the hidden beauty in strict structures, because we all use the bridges as travellers, we dash through them, and very often we don’t even see their eye-catcher beauty. What does the bridge mean to me?
The bridge is not only material and structure. The bridge means the whish of crossing, the dream of the designer, the ingenuity and sweat of the constructor. The laws of the nature included in science and profession. It contains the heat of the summer and the breath of the winter, which goes into the bones. They are including the flood and drought, the dawn song of the birds and the flash of lightning. They consist of the old masters-techniques and the new ones, which can come easily or after hard work. And some novelty is always necessary, because all new bridges are different. The diversity may not be big, not important, but a new idea is required, because it must go on, we have to build. This ever constancy and ever renewal affected me taking photos. Peter Gyukics
